Announcement

On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the International James Baldwin Conference and in my capacity as Chair of Department, I regret to announce that we have decided to to cancel the conference due to quite a few of our participants having unexpectedly dropped out.

Although we will not be holding the conference this year, we think that it would do great injustice to participants who have kindly sent proposals, to academicians and students who have shown great interest in the conference, and above all, to Baldwin, if we abandoned the project entirely. Therefore, it is my pleasure to inform you that our plenary speaker Robert F. Reid-Pharr, Distinguished and Presidential Professor of American Studies at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will be with us at Başkent University on May 4 and 5. On May 4, Reid-Pharr will be reading selections from his 2016 book Archives of Flesh: African America, Spain, and Post-Humanist Critique. On May 5, he will give a lecture entitled “‘Effective Defective’ James Baldwin.” For further information on both events, please click here, or the "Program" tab from the menu.

As with our previous conferences on Henry James and F. Scott Fitzgerald, we are also planning to produce a volume of academic articles on Baldwin. We will soon be posting further information on Prof. Reid-Pharr’s visit and the preparations for the volume of articles.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.
